Wow! I’m late getting this one up. Although it is traditionally called The Year of the Boar, often in the west it’s referred to as The Year of the Pig. And that was my first approach (see the image below). With the two previous annual illustrations (Rooster and Dog) I tried to take a basic shape on each and play off of it. Below you can see I was relying heavily on the circle. I did dozens of variations before settling on the one below.
I liked it; it was a fun image. But I thought: what if I did try a version of a boar? So I started over and came up with the image above. I liked it even better. I especially liked using the boar’s curly tail to create the 9 for 2019.
For the interior of the Holiday card I sent out, I did a silhouette of the boar and enlarged the curly tail to emphasize the 9. Next year: the Rat. I’ll try to post a little earlier too. 🙂
